Yesterday was the last of Brody's surgeries for this summer. I have been quite anxious about the whole thing. It's very frustrating to have doctors tell you how routine the procedure is and its "no big deal". I'm sorry. But to a momma, well this momma, it is a very big deal. That's my baby you are working on. I wish doctors would tell me what to expect. I am very much a planner. I like to know exactly whats going to happen and what I can expect when I see him.
I did not expect to see him look the way he did after surgery yesterday. This time, I did not get the calls after each step, so we didn't find out about everything until he was in recovery. Again, not my favorite. I like to know what's going on with my kid. But, I do have to say. The doctor's do know what they are talking about, I guess my complaint is just that they remember I have NO idea what they are talking about. I just know that is my kid and I love him more than anything in this world.
So case in point. I was nervous and have been nervous about the surgery all week. Wednesday night we put him down at normal time and prayed for the Lord to be with him and the doctors in the morning. I prayed so hard that he would give me strength. I prayed he would give the doctors wisdom, steady hands, and patience (with me). I prayed that he would heal Brody quickly as the last surgery took some time.
He listened.
We took Brody to the hospital at 5:30. They brought us back around 6:30 for the usual questions, doc visits and explanations, etc. Doc said procedure should only last 20 minutes. Okay. I can do this. Unless there is more blockage and then they will insert tubes. Tubes...okay...like tubes in his ears...we got this...no big deal. Each tube would take an additional 30 minutes per ear. 20 min + 30 min + 30 min...okay about an hour an a half. I can do this. They took him from me at 7:00. Called us at 7:30 to tell us he was asleep and they were getting ready to start. Deep breath. 8:00...no call. 8:30...no call. 9:00...no call.
Okay, must have had to do tubes. 9:30, nurse comes out. I immediately grab all of Brody's stuff running to her to go see him. Nope. We'll come get you in a little while. He's fine (he's fine? I can hear him screaming all the way out here!) We just want to prepare you for how he looks. How he looks? Basically he looked like he had been beat up in the face. Not as bad as those plastic surgeries you see on tv. Just swollen eyes and nose, and a bloody nose. We got to see him around 10:00 and stayed with him until almost 12:00.
Doc came in and told us about the procedure. He said it went great and we could cancel our appointment for the next day (today). He said the did insert tubes because there was too much blockage and the tubes would let the duct heal open instead of closing up with scar tissue. Here's the kicker: They are real tubes. They go from his tear duct down the inside of his nose. He sutured them to his nose. And they come out. Hopefully they will come out when the doctor takes them out, but in most cases the kids pull them out themselves. Either through their eye or their nose. WHAT?!!!?? Seriously! Anyways...we'll just hope for the best with that one.
We came home and he got sick twice. I prepared myself for a long afternoon said a prayer and within 30 minutes Brody was climbing all over the place. Throwing his ball with Bailey, laughing, singing to Elmo. We didn't have this speedy of a recovery with ear tubes.
He listened. Thank you, thank you, thank you! Thank you for listening!
